Tim Herron

Deputy Director, Washington State

Dr. Tim Herron serves as deputy director of the Gates Foundation's Washington State team, where he is responsible for the team’s work to foster regional partnerships, increase adoption of effective solutions, and improve data ecosystems in order to close the gap between Washington students’ aspiration and enrollment in postsecondary pathways.

Tim began his career as a middle and high school math teacher and then spent two decades building and leading innovative on-the-ground college and career programs in partnership with diverse communities and institutions across Washington. He was the founder and CEO of Degrees of Change and creator of Act Six, a nationally recognized cohort-based college success and leadership development program.

Tim holds a doctorate in higher education leadership and policy from the University of Washington along with a master’s degree in teaching and bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Puget Sound. He was recognized with an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Whitworth University and awarded the executive leadership award of excellence from the National College Attainment Network.

After growing up in Spokane, Tim has made his home in Tacoma for more than three decades. He and his wife, a public elementary teacher, spent 25 of those years learning, living, working, and raising their family in the city’s beautiful Hilltop neighborhood.
